Hardy County
Hardy County has several important recreational resources. Part of the George Washington National Forests lies within the county, as does the Lost River State Park, consisting of 3,700 acres. The South Branch boasts some of the best fishing and white water rafting in the east and the tourist industry has become increasingly important.

Moorefield, the county seat, is located on the South Branch of the Potomac. It was chartered in 1744 and named for Conrad Moore, the owner of the town site. The town has always been a shipping and trading center for this rich agricultural region.
