Mason County
Mason County was an important battle ground in the early history of West Virginia. The decisive battle of Lord Dunmore's War was fought at Point Pleasant on Oct. 10, 1774. The victory over Indian forces lead by Shawnee chieftain Cornstalk allowed the area to permanently be settled.

Mason County was formed in 1894 form the western part of Kanawha County. The county is named for George Mason, a landowner and statesman from Virginia.

Located at the confluence of the Kanawha and Ohio rivers, Mason County was attractive to early settlers because of the rich bottom land. The two rivers also it allowed cheap transportation of raw materials such as salt and timber.

The county once had a modest coal industry. Today most jobs are provided by light industry in the area.

Point Pleasant is the county seat of Mason County.
