About Seneca Caverns

Hidden beneath the Earth's surface only a few miles from the highest point in West Virginia, lie the beautiful SENECA CAVERNS - a veritable wonderland!

Subterranean rooms filled with the splendor of nature's artistry, create an air of enchantment. Visitors may set free their imaginations as they gaze upon the formations, such as stalagmites and stalactites, that have been fashioned by drops of water trickling through the roof of the caverns for thousands of years. The caverns contains an abundance of snow-white and creamy streaks of flowstone, where water flowing in a very thin sheet over rocks has deposited mineral matter. Streaks of flowstone lace themselves with tawny color as they drape the walls and fall over precipitous edges. In several rooms, you will find flecks of calcite crystal woven into the flowstone causing reflected light to dance and sparkle.

Candy Mountain

During the sixteen and seventeen hundreds, the caverns served as a refuge for the Seneca Indians. The Seneca tribe used the caverns for ceremonial use and refuge from cold winter storms and enemy tribes.

While on tour, you will walk through a section of the caverns known as The Council Room. Legend claims that Chief Bald Eagle held many council meetings in this section. Evidence of this remains today with the presence of smoke-stained walls from their many campfires.

As you continue the tour, you will discover many other magnificent formations. Mirror Lake is an underground waterpool that reflects the beautiful overhead formations.
